Squidward creates the character of the 'hash-slinging slasher' in order to scare SpongeBob as a form of entertainment during their 24-hour night shift. Having aired for more than two decades and showing no sign of slowing down, we have to wonder what wacky and wild things may hit the airwaves in the future. The hash-slinging slasher is the main character in a ghost story told by Squidward in the episode 'Graveyard Shift.' He has a rusty spatula for a left hand and has dark red eyes and a black hunch-backed body. Yet, this is where the best stories came out of SpongeBob. With most episodes clocking in at eleven minutes, complete stories had to be told with a great many constraints. Thompson-esque surrealist jaunt through a clarinet forest to an actual reference to the infamous "Red Mist" internet creepypasta, there are plenty of creepy Spongebob episodes yet to be discussed. While the SpongeBob movies might reach greater heights in their storytelling, nothing can compare to the efficient storytelling of the television series.

Suddenly, it seems like Squidward’s story is coming true. For fun, Squidward makes up the story of a ghostly cook known as the Hash Slinging Slasher who haunts the Krusty Krab. However, underneath the simple wit, the show can get meta at times, with genius references, and even subtle adult jokes every now and then. The Hash Slinging Slasher appears in Squidward's stage (B-Movie) in SpongeBob SquigglePants, which was a prank by SpongeBob and Patrick to scare Squidward, if the player loses all of their lives, SpongeBob and Patrick reveal themselves and scare Squidward, but if the player wins, SpongeBob and Patrick fall, with Squidward looking in annoyance. Graveyard Shift: Squidward and SpongeBob are forced to work 24 hours a day by Mr. Nickelodeon's most popular cartoon, SpongeBob Squarepants, is filled with episodes that evoke an illogical, goofy sense of humor.
